Fire-rated doors have to be self-closing and this is why:
Fire doors only protect against fire when they are closed. The door has to be closed in order to seal the room and stop the fire for a certain period of time. When a fire-door is open and a fire occurs, the fire can easily spread to the other compartments of the building as there is no barrier stopping it.
It is important to provide the door with a self-closing device, to ensure that it closes by itself if someone left it open.
What makes a door self-closing?
Door closers were specifically designed to close swing doors. They should be used on all fire-rated swing doors.
Door closers can also be used in conjunction with electromagnets that hold the door open and only detach the door leaf when the fire alarm goes on, allowing the door closers to work.
