Not all metal doors are fire doors, and not all fire doors are made of metal.
Whether a metal door is fire-rated or not depends on its composition. Fire-rated metal doors are filled with a fire-resistant material, such as rock wool, and feature an intumescent gasket around the frame. The gasket expands when it comes into contact with fire to seal the door and prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent rooms.
In addition, fire doors are identified with a descriptive label indicating the fire safety standards with which the door complies. The European standard is identified by the designation “EI2 (t) C5, ” where “t” represents the number of minutes of fire resistance. The label may also indicate that a door bears the CE mark.
A metal fire door is typically equipped with a door closer to help keep the door closed, and with a panic bar if it leads to a stairwell or serves as an emergency exit.
