Elements of a fire-rated smart door
There are different types of measurements that must be taken into account when choosing a fire door and preparing the wall opening.
Clear Opening
It is the gap that remains for the passage when the door is installed and open, the useful gap that will remain for the user.
Structural Opening
It is the necessary hole to install the door, so the hole that has been left prepared in the wall to install the door frame.
Total Dimension
It is somewhat wider than the work gap, since it includes the frame overlap. That is, it is the one that is measured outside the frame overlap.
The structural opening and the total dimension vary depending on the design or model of the frame. Thus, two doors of the same clear opening size may need two different structural openings and will also have a different total dimension.
On the drawings below we show how to go from one dimension to another depending on whether the door frame is standard Z-shaped or U-shaped tunnel.
