What is a fire door, and what is it used for?
Doors are fixtures used to divide the space within a building in order to assign different functions to each room. However, an ordinary door is of no use when it comes to people’s safety.
Fire doors, on the other hand, are designed to provide safe spaces within buildings. Thus, in the event of a fire, the door isolates the room affected by the fire and allows for a faster and safer evacuation of the building and extinguishing of the fire.
What is a fire door?
Fire doors can be made of metal, wood, or glass, and are installed in strategic areas of a building to divide the space into compartments. The larger the building, the more compartments it will have. Thus, if a fire breaks out in one of the sections, the fire door will prevent the fire and smoke from spreading to the adjacent section. Therefore, its function is to prevent the fire from spreading, allow for safe evacuation, and facilitate rescue and firefighting efforts.
Features of a Fire Door
Fire doors may have varying degrees of fire resistance, but they must all meet the following requirements:
• Integrity, or the ability to withstand the effects of fire on the exposed side without allowing it to spread to the unexposed side due to the escape of flames or gases.
• Fire resistance, or the ability to withstand the effects of fire on the exposed side without allowing the fire to spread to the opposite side due to heat transfer.
• Fire resistance time. It will be 30, 60, 90, or up to 120 minutes.
• Durability of the self-closing mechanism. That is, the ability to maintain clearances, forces, and opening and closing speeds without developing defects after undergoing a considerable number of opening and closing cycles.
Where should a fire door be installed?
The use of fire doors is not limited solely to large buildings or public buildings; it also extends to private residences and any facility where appropriate preventive measures are required to ensure the safety and protection of people.
